The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) has announced that it will launch a live ‘update service’ on 17 June 2013. Once individuals are registered on the update service, employers will be able to carry out a free, online check on the current and up-to-date status of an individual’s DBS certificate.
The new update service will enable certificates to be portable between roles (provided the same level and type of check are required) because DBS certificates will be kept up to date with any new changes being added to the information on the certificate. This will be a major improvement to the existing system under which the DBS certificate is a ‘snapshot’ — only showing convictions and relevant information available at the time the certificate was issued.
Individuals will pay a fee of £13 a year (free for volunteers) to subscribe to the DBS update service…
