City firm Wedlake Bell has traditionally been known for its property practice. This helps explain why turnover has fallen by 12 per cent since the property market slumped back in 2008.

After a poor showing last year the firm recovered some ground in 2009-10. Off a flat turnover of £19.8m it posted a staggering 120 per cent hike in average profit per equity partner to £220,000 and an 89 per cent rise in net profit to £3.4m.

Cost-cutting measures, such as making 18 staff redundant and reducing the equity partnership from 17 to 14, helped.

Property, which contributed £5.7m in revenue, remains integral, while private client at 20 per cent is another strong area.
