Newcastle-based Watson Burton appears to have overstretched itself in recent years. Six years ago the firm began looking beyond its North East roots, opening offices in Leeds in 2004 and in the iconic Gherkin tower in London two years later.
Since 2006-07, however, the firm’s turnover has fallen from £22.7m to an estimated £18.5m in 2009-10.
Last year the firm’s partner numbers also dropped, by 34 per cent, to 29.
That number is reflective of the series of departures Watson Burton has seen since the beginning of the year, including those of senior partner Rob Langley, insolvency head Andrew Cawkwell and wealth management chief Keith Hately.
The firm has replaced Langley with former corporate head Gillian Hall, who admits that the past year has been difficult for the firm. Hall has vowed to turn things around, but on current form that will not prove easy.
