Shakespeare Putsman’s decrease in revenue this year was due to a dramatic fall-off in commercial property work, which dipped from £6m to £3.8m. That saw a concomitant reduction in fee-earners in that department, from 60 to 34, although the partner cohort remained steady at nine in that group.
The best-performing department by revenue was financial services litigation, which brought in £4.9m.
The reduction in turnover had an impact on the firm’s margin, which dropped to 16.8 per cent. Average profit per equity partner stood at £187,000, with the equity spread £145,000-£240,000.
The firm’s merger with Needham & James, which will take effect in the coming financial year, will deliver a £4m property business plus some £1.9m in private client work, adding to Shakespeare Putsman’s existing £800,000 turnover in that area.
It was followed in August 2010 by a merger with Nottingham-based Berryman, a deal that will take the larger firm’s turnover to around £30m this year.
