Although revenue at Paris Smith shrank from £12m to £10.5m in 2009-10, its profit margin remained healthy at 29.5 per cent. Staff numbers were trimmed from 175 to 165; there was a reduction in qualified lawyers over the year, from 80 to 70, and the number of support staff dropped from 85 to 68. However, the number of non-qualified fee-earners rose from 10 to 27. This eye on headcount kept revenue per lawyer steady at £150,000, the same as 2008-09.

Property, which has consistently represented a third of the business, continued to be the biggest single fee generator at 34.8 per cent of revenue, garnering £3.65m in billings, or £365,000 per partner – although the heavy property weighting of the firm may have contributed to the long lock-up time of 151 days. Litigation, at only £1.58m, or 15 per cent, of turnover, was the best department in terms of revenue per partner at £527,000, but that figure is skewed by a higher number of non-qualified fee-earners.
