Three years after the merger between Maxwell Batley and Winward Fearon, Maxwell Winward has hit its first rocky patch. The year to 31 March 2010 saw a 15 per cent drop in turnover for the built environment boutique, with the £9.8m brought in marking the first time it has dipped under the £10m mark since the 2007 tie-up.
Much of the shortfall can be accounted for by the continuing struggles of the real estate market. Turnover, which accounts for a quarter of total income, was down by around 30 per cent over the past 18 months. The loss of a construction partner also affected the bottom line at the 20-partner firm. However, net profit and average profit per equity partner both stayed flat, with the bottom line performance boosted by the firm’s strong hand in PFI and corporate work for private clients.
