Kingsley Napley added £2m to its turnover during 2009-10, taking total revenue at the litigation specialist from £19.5m to £21.5m and the firm into the upper half of The Lawyer’s top 200 this year.
Criminal and regulatory, clinical negligence and employment all exceeded budget, while corporate chipped in £2.4m and both property and family and private client generated £1.9m. Last year the net profit available for full equity partners was £4.25m, giving an average profit per equity partner of £425,000.
The equity shares on Kingsley Napley’s modified lockstep spread between £290,000 and £520,000.
Criminal and regulatory work remains the lynchpin of the Clerkenwell firm. However, the work profile has changed over the past decade, with legal aid work now accounting for only 1 per cent of the practice. The 14-partner criminal and regulatory group generated 41 per cent of the business, or £8.8m in turnover, during 2009-10.
The firm is targeting more public law and judicial review work, having hired Adam Chapman, formerly of the Treasury Solicitor’s Department and the Attorney General’s Office, earlier this year.
Another growth area is claimant clinical negligence. The group headed by Kate Rohde has invested in well-regarded lateral hires such as Dr Jock Mackenzie from Leigh Day and Stephanie Code, former clinical negligence head at Charles Russell. A third area of growth is employment, in which Kingsley Napley is gaining a reputation for advising City institutions, including magic circle firms.
