Keoghs did not disclose its figures this year, but The Lawyer estimates that the Bolton-headquartered firm made £33m in 2009-10. This is a 10 per cent increase on the audited turnover for the 2008-09 financial year and is broadly in line with the growth levels reported by other firms that have a heavy dependence on the insurance sector.
Keoghs, which has a Midlands office in Coventry, is focused on defendant insurance litigation, acting for insurers and self-insured organisations. Its business is split into three areas: high-volume, low-margin claims management work (CMS); more technical claims work; and counter-fraud work.
Last December the firm hired Steve Thomas, formerly technical claims director for general insurance giant Zurich and a key figure in introducing reform of the volume claims market, as director of its CMS unit.
Keoghs was one of a small group of firms that registered interest in the insurance business of the now defunct Halliwells. In the end that part of the business was snapped up in its entirety by larger rival Barlow Lyde & Gilbert.
