Keeble Hawson saw a dip in turnover last year, from £11.1m to £10.7m, but its commercial practice still held up relatively well, accounting for 40 per cent of firmwide turnover, or £4.3m. Although staff numbers were trimmed, there were no drastic reductions. The fee-earner figure of 91 is down by 14 from 2008-09, while the number of qualified lawyers actually increased, from 52 to 54, during the same time period.
Three years ago the firm had a primarily defendant insurance practice, but panel consolidation meant that it has reconfigured itself as a claimant personal injury and clinical negligence firm across its three offices of Sheffield, Leeds and Doncaster – the latter now operating as a launchpad for Lincolnshire and the East Coast markets. Average profit per equity partner stood at £138,000.
