Despite the continuing softness in some of its transactional areas, media and entertainment-focused Harbottle & Lewis had a solid 2009-10. Turnover was all but flat at £16.8m, while average profit per equity partner stood at £261,000. Litigation contributed 32 per cent of total revenue, while the privacy team handled high-profile work for clients such as the Queen and Kate Middleton.
Harbottle is continuing its drive, launched two years ago, with the appointment of chief operating officer Derek Godfrey, formerly of PricewaterhouseCoopers and Eversheds, to improve billings and collections. In 2008-09 total lockup was 263 days at the year-end. Last year that high number dropped to 198 days, which is still some way off the firm’s aggressive 110-day target, but is nevertheless heading in the right direction.
