Oxford-based Darbys remains loyal to its roots, reflected in a client base that includes the likes of Blenheim Palace, The British Horse Society and many of the region’s surrounding colleges.
This is the second year that the firm has appeared in the The Lawyer’s UK 200 list, although turnover at Darbys has dropped from £8m in 2008-09 to £7.5m in 2009-10.
Despite the total number of fee-earners remaining fairly static for both years (77 in 2008-09 and 67 in 2009-10), the firm’s managing partner Simon McCrum admits that there has been “some major restructuring” in every department.
Commercial property remains one of the firm’s strongest practice areas, accounting for £1.4m of total revenue; this is followed closely by clinical negligence, private client and commercial.
Work-in-progress was 83 and the lockup target was 137 at the year-end.
