Prudent management has meant that, unlike some of its South East rivals, Tunbridge Wells-headquartered Cripps Harries Hall has avoided making redundancies over the past two years.

Turnover held steady at £19.2m in 2009-10, but total profit increased by 10.8 per cent to £5.1m. Private client remains Cripps’ biggest earner, accounting for between 35 and 40 per cent of turnover, while property and litigation also performed well. The firm’s average number of debtor days is 67.

Surprisingly for a firm of its size (it has 95 lawyers across offices in Tunbridge Wells and London), the firm has two full-time credit controllers tasked with chasing up bills.

In recent years the firm’s remuneration system has evolved into a modified lockstep running from 50 to 125 points, with progression based on annual performance reviews and a partnership committee.
