Scotland’s Burness regained the ground it lost during the 2008-09 financial year in 2009-10, earning itself a place back in the UK top 100 following a one-year hiatus.
The firm, which has offices in Edinburgh and Glasgow, saw turnover rise by 5 per cent, from £20.2m to £21.2m. A focus on cost-cutting had an even bigger impact on the bottom line, with net profit rising by 73 per cent, from £4.6m to £7.95m. This resulted in a greatly improved average profit per equity partner (PEP) and equity spread.
PEP was up by 94 per cent, from £157,000 to £305,000, while the equity spread, which went from £90,000 to £180,000 in 2008-09, ran from £170,000 to £340,000 last year – roughly the same level seen in 2007-08.
While property remains Burness’s greatest revenue generator, its share of the total fell from 37 per cent in 2008-09 to 29 per cent last year. Litigation’s share grew as a result.
Burness won a number of new clients last year, including Gala Coral, Whyte & Mackay and ITN.
