Ipswich-headquartered Birketts has grown enormously since the appointment of former Bank of Scotland regional director Alistair Lang as chief executive in 2001. In 2004-05 the firm’s turnover was £6.3m; last year the figure was £17.8m, a hike of 183 per cent. Profit is healthy too at a margin of 28 per cent, or £5.1m.
Apart from one commercial property partner who was let go in 2008, the firm made no fee-earner redundancies during the downturn.
Senior partner Nigel Farthing says partners should take the hit.
Real estate remains Birketts’ primary source of income, accounting for 36 per cent (£6.4m) of revenue and occupying 16 of its 41 partners.
The firm also has one of the largest shipping teams outside the City plus a rapidly growing Cambridge office.
