CMS Cameron McKenna's European strategy has suffered a setback after the withdrawal of Swedish member firm Tisell & Co. Tisell was a founder member of CMS. But it now intends to join the legal and consulting arm of Ernst & Young. The 13-partner firm plans to merge with Ernst &Young's Swedish legal, tax and consulting offices in January 2000.
Shearman & Sterling is believed to be in merger talks with German firm Schilling Zutt & Anschutz. The Mannheim-based firm is expected to vote on the merger in the next few months. It is understood a unanimous decision is needed for the merger to go ahead.
The Lord Chancellor's Department is to appoint a Commissioner for Judicial Appointments following the publication of a report into the selection of judges and silks. Sir Leonard Peach, the author of the report, also recommends a number of deputy commissioners be appointed to provide ongoing monitoring of procedures and act as ombudsman for failed candidates.
Veale Wasbrough in Bristol has expanded its construction team with the appointment of two senior lawyers. Della Johnson joins from London and Essex firm Merricks where she was a partner, and Alex Standish comes from Wragge & Co in Birmingham. The appointments follow the departure of construction partner Martin Howe to Bevan Ashford.
CMS Cameron McKenna has lost two technology partners. Julian Thurston, head of commercial technology, has left to launch the life sciences practice of US firm Arnold & Porter's London office. Jeremy Newton, an IT partner, is going to Sun Microsystems' legal team.
Clifford Chance's Frankfurt office has lost partner Hans-Guenther Nordhues to Ashurst Morris Crisp. Nordhues is the first German partner to leave since CC announced its plans to merge with Punder Volhard Weber Axster.
Maclay Murray & Spens, a 44-partner Glasgow firm, has poached a partner from Edge Ellison's London office. Gary Cullen is joining the firm's corporate pensions department. He joins commercial property partner Chris Smylie who has been hired by Maclay Murray from Scottish firm Ledingham Chalmers.
Eversheds has reviewed its management structure in the North East. Michael Spriggs will become executive senior partner and Chris Hugill managing partner when present incumbent Nigel Robson, and senior partners Chris Hilton and Ronald Bradbeer step down at the end of April 2000.
