A recommendation from leading investment bank UBS has led to Dewey Ballantine taking on its first German lateral.

Philipp von Ilberg is moving to the US firm from Clifford Chance Pünder, which he joined in 1997 before becoming a partner in 2001.

Von Ilberg is the firm’s first German hire since setting up a German capability 18 months ago, when Geza Toth-Feher joined from Weil Gotshal & Manges.

Although von Ilberg is a capital markets lawyer, he also specialises in corporate finance.

Toth-Feher said the firm was looking for a corporate finance specialist to broaden the German office, since it also offers private equity through Toth-Feher, whose clients include GE Capital and Lonestar. The firm is also in the process of recruiting a German tax lawyer.

Toth-Feher said it was after a recommendation from a contact at UBS that he first approached von Ilberg. “He was so impressed with Philipp that he told me I should talk to him,” said Toth-Feher.
