Developments in the anaerobic digestion market

While the AD sector remains relatively immature, Defra’s 2012–13 annual report on its Anaerobic Digestion Strategy and Action Plan, published in August, notes that: in the year up to July 2013, 32 AD plants became operational; proposals for a further 200 AD facilities have also secured planning permission, according to Defra; there are two facilities in England designed to inject gas to grid.

Funding remains predominantly equity based, with many projects struggling to meet the requirements of banks. Key challenges include security of feedstock and assurances of future performance. The report notes ongoing work in developing feedstock and digestate markets, key components to funding projects.
