Two Garden Court has clinched the 1998 Bar Pro Bono Award.
The common law set, headed by Ian Macdonald QC & Owen Davies, was singled out for its commitment to pro bono work, which includes representing bereaved families at inquests, assisting refugees seeking political asylum and appearing in Privy Council death row cases.
It was nominated by London firm Christian Fisher & Co, which the chambers assisted in several of the cases.
Runners up for the award were: Patrick O'Connor QC, of 1 Crown Office Row, for his work in numerous inquests; Sarah George, of 7 Fountain Court, Birmingham, for her work on a discrimination case for 22 former British Gas staff; and Murray Shanks, of Fountain Court, London, for his support of the Fulham Legal Advice Centre.
The award was presented by the Attorney General, John Morris QC, at an evening reception of the Bar Annual Conference.
Peter Goldsmith QC, chairman of the Bar Pro Bono Unit, said: "Two Garden Court, as worthy winners, gave us a particularly strong example of ways in which both branches of the profession can combine to great effect where vulnerable individuals might otherwise be denied justice."
