Dechert scoops 3i counsel

Dechert has landed the senior counsel of private equity group 3i as a partner in its Munich bureau.

Berthold Hummel will join the firm’s corporate and securities practice in January having spent the last six years at 3i working on leveraged buyouts and venture capital deals.

He has advised on a series of high profile deals including Betapharm on its EUR300m leveraged buyout plus IPO for biopharmaceutical company Paion.

Prior to joining 3i Hummel was general counsel at Munich’s Technologieholding and helped built up the private equity and venture capital practice of Schürmann & Partners.

Hummel will have at least one familiar face when he joins Dechert. Federico Pappalardo, head of the firm’s Munich office, worked at Schürmann & Partners at the same time as Hummel.

Last year 3i added Dechert to its German panel in a review overseen by Hummel and fellow in-house counsel John Tecesare. Clifford Chance was also added to the panel while CMS Hasche Sigle and SJ Berwin retained positions. Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer lost its panel place.
