Dechert is ramping up its China presence with the hire of a private equity partner in Beijing office and plans to open in Shanghai in the near future.
The new partner, Wang Weidong, was most recently a partner at Beijing-headquartered DeHeng Law Offices, one of China’s largest law firms by headcount.
Wang, who is admitted to practise in New York, is head of the DeHeng’s venture capital market private equity practice and has spent considerable time working on client matters in the firm’s New York office. Prior to joining DeHeng, he worked in the corporate and securities group of Sidley Austin in Chicago from 1996 to 2002.
“We’re actively pursuing the expansion of our Asia operations,” said Asia managing partner Jingzhou Tao. “Wang’s well-established private equity practice will complement the firm’s worldwide private equity capacity. We’re also in the process of strengthening our international arbitration and IP practices.”
“The launch of an office in Shanghai is also forthcoming,” added Tao.
The appointment of Wang has taken the total number of partners in Dechert’s Greater China practice to nine.
Dechert opened its first Asia office in Hong Kong in 2007 and its first mainland China office in Beijing in 2008. The firm hired China veteran Tao from Jones Day in June 2011 to drive the firm’s expansion in Asia.
