Debevoise boosts Paris with Linklaters raid

Debevoise & Plimpton has boosted its Paris corporate capabilities with the hire of Linklaters’ Patrick Laporte.

Laporte joins the US firm after seven years as a partner at Linklaters. He brings with him several associates, including Severine Canarelli who becomes an ‘international counsel’ at Debevoise.

His hire marks a return for Debevoise to a focus on mergers and acquisitions (M&A), following a period of growth in its French securities practice. Laporte’s practice encompasses corporate M&A, but he also has a strong corporate insurance practice which fits with Debevoise’s US insurance capabilities.

Debevoise’s European managing partner James Kiernan said the firm was “extremely busy” in French M&A at the moment.

“Patrick is one of the recognised leaders in M&A in Paris,” Kiernan said. He added: “We have always said that we have wanted to build up our international M&A practice.”

Laporte rejoins Pierre Clermontel, who moved from Linklaters to Debevoise in 2000. He is Debevoise’s sixth French partner.
