Simmons & Simmons won its role in this initial public offering (IPO) via its Milan office, which has an existing relationship with Abaxbank. Bruno Gattai's team has worked with Abaxbank on the issue of a number of corporate loans and is also advising it on other IPOs. The firm's relationship with BNP Paribas is a more recent one. Gattai, who is managing partner of Simmons' Italian offices, led on the Italian aspects of the retail offering, while Colin Leaver's London team advised on the institutional offering. GranitiFiandre is the first company in 2001 to obtain the new Star qualification on Italy's electronic stock exchange, the Mercato Telematico Azionario. The Star category is dedicated to small to medium-sized enterprises offering high-quality products or services which meet specific transparency, liquidity and corporate governance requirements. Though paltry compared to last year, the number of IPOs in Italy is picking up a little and Simmons is working on around five others.
