As the annual property mega-conference gets under way, Jay Epstien shares his survival tips
Welcome to MIPIM 2013! I have arrived in sunny Cannes this morning for my 6th MIPIM. It is, as always, exciting to return to Cannes for one of the leading global real estate conferences, surrounded by leaders from every segment of the industry and virtually every region around the world. I look forward to gaining market insights from thought leaders and a better understanding of the predictions for deal activity in the coming year. Early reports indicate that there are more than 20,000 people registered this year.
I will be joined by more than 50 of my partners at MIPIM this year. We will have DLA representatives from London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Munich, Milan, Madrid, Prague, Moscow, Hong Kong, Sydney, New York and Washington, DC. And, once again, we will host a cocktail reception on board the Queen South, where we are based this year, as well as a series of lunches and networking events throughout the week.
If you have not already done so, be sure to download the MIPIM app for your smart phone or tablet. The app gives you full access to floor plans, registered companies and visitors, and allows you to communicate inside the MIPIM website while you are on the go.
If you are a first-time attendee, be sure to read this article.
Lastly, another great article to get everyone started is the Top 10 List for surviving MIPIM. Highlights of the list include:
Surviving MIPIM: Top Ten List
1. Think of your Feet: Want to show off your new pair of Testoni dress shoes? Try again … . MIPIM is neither a fashion show nor a display of world beauty. This is a business show … with a maddening surface area to walk every day, not to mention the walk to and from your hotel.
4. Less is more: A notebook, a smartphone, an IPAD, a pen and some cards is all you need.
6. Weather alert: Sunglasses - despite the chance of rain, it is more often than not bright and sunny in Cannes. And trust me, you’ll find most participants sunning themselves on mini breaks outside the Palais with their coolest shades … one of the easy touches of personalisation among all the grey suits. That being said, still pack an umbrella!
