Davis Polk names Scotsman as firmwide managing partner
Davis Polk & Wardwell has elected British lawyer Tom Reid as its new managing partner, replacing incumbent John Ettinger.

The news comes after Ettinger surprised the market earlier this year by announcing he was stepping down.
Reid, a Scotsman from Kirkcaldy, has been a member of the Wall Street firm’s three-partner management committee for the past three years, having relocated from the UK.
Reid joined Davis Polk as an associate in 1987 and was elected partner in 1995. He left the firm to become a managing director in the investment banking division of Morgan Stanley in London, rejoining the US firm in 2003.
“I’m grateful to have worked closely with John Ettinger for the past several years,” said Reid. “Under his leadership, Davis Polk has protected and enhanced our 160-year-old franchise. We’ve navigated extremely volatile market conditions since 2008 and further established the firm as the go-to practice for our clients across their most strategic and sensitive transactions and litigation matters.”
Reid’s appointment coincides with the appointment of a new management team at Davis Polk. John Bick, global head of the firm’s 485-lawyer corporate department, has also been appointed to Davis Polk’s management committee where he joins litigation group head Carey Dunne on the three-member team.

I hear one of his election pledges was to implement a purely merit-based jock step at the firm.
