Davis Polk launches HK law practice with hires from Freshfields and HKSE

US firm Davis Polk & Wardwell has launched a domestic law practice in Hong Kong with two new partners.

Bonnie YT Chan and Antony Dapiran have been brought into the Hong Kong partnership to launch the local practice, which aims to give the firm’s clients a broader service in Hong Kong, particularly in capital markets and M&A.

Before joining David Polk Chan was the senior vice president of the listing division of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and, before that, executive director of the legal and compliance department of Morgan Stanley’s Hong Kong office. Dapiran was managing partner of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer’s Beijing office and will relocate to Hong Kong.

Asian practice managing partner William Barron said: “Many of us at Davis Polk have worked with Bonnie and Antony for many years. We’ve come to greatly admire not only their exceptional skill and knowledge, particularly in complex securities matters, but also the hands-on and collaborative approach that each shares. Both are excellent cultural and strategic fits for our law firm.”

According to Barron the firm is also hoping to bring in some new associates within the next month.

  • This is a further sign of a sea change in the HK legal market after Latham's raid on A&O. The US white shoe firms have heretofore let the Magic Circle dominate HK-law practice. Not anymore. That DPW poached a managing partner of Freshfields' China office no less is a sign that they mean business.
