Davis Polk & Wardwell has further bolstered its English law capability in London with the hire of another Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer partner.
Tax lawyer Jonathan Cooklin, who heads the magic circle firm’s insurance tax group, has been a partner at Freshfields since 2001 and has practised at the firm for 19 years. He specialises in corporate tax and tax planning, advising FTSE companies on tax aspects of complex corporate transactions.
“Jonathan’s another exceptional addition to our growing English law practice,” said Davis Polk managing partner Tom Reid in a statement. “Jonathan’s tax expertise will help drive the expansion of our English law capabilities, both with additional strategic lateral hires and through the development of our own highly talented English-law-qualified lawyers.”
Davis Polk launched an English-law practice in London at the beginning of this year with the hire of Freshfields equity capital markets partner Simon Witty (6 January 2012). Until then the firm had offered only US-law advice in London, relying on best friends relationships with UK firms - Slaughter and May in particular - for English-law advice.
“We expect to make additional senior strategic hires in London in the practice areas that our increasingly global transactions require,” the firm said in a statement.
