Davies, Simon – Hot 100

While other foreign firms have been scaling back their presences, Linklaters bucked the trend by doubling the size of its Tokyo office overnight last December.

Thanks to Linklaters Asia managing partner Simon Davies, the firm pulled off a coup in merging its Tokyo practice with local Japanese firm Mitsui Yasuda Wani & Maeda – a stunning achievement for someone who has been in the role for just over a year.

As part of the deal, leading bengoshi Mitsuhiro Yasuda and Akihiro Wani and their team of 29 associates moved into new premises in Marunouchi, Tokyo’s traditional business district, on 6 December.

The move paves the way for a full merger on 1 April 2005, when new laws allowing multijurisdictional partnerships in Japan come into effect.
