Daimler revamps legal function with formal panel and new GC

German car manufacturer Daimler has appointed its debut legal panel with long-standing advisers making the cut.
Nabarro, which has not previously acted for the automotive giant, joins Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Shearman & Sterling, Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom and Willkie Farr & Gallagher on the roster.
It is understood that the mandates will cover a full range of legal services in Europe and the US, with Nabarro advising the company in the UK.
In addition, the company has hired Emerson Electric general counsel Renata Jungo Brüngger as its new head of legal. Brüngger, who joins on 1 November, will replace Gero Herrmann, who will become the company’s new head of strategy and alliances.
Freshfields has been a long-standing adviser to the car manufacturer, most recently acting on its joint bid with Rolls-Royce for engine-maker Tognum (21 March 2011) and advising on its three-way tie-up with Renault and Nissan last year (7 April 2010).
Both Shearman and Skadden have acted for Daimler in the past, with Shearman advising on the purchase of the company’s final stake in MTU Friedrichshafen - a manufacturer of large diesel engines (14 November 2005).
Daimler’s search for its first legal panel sparked some controversy with members of the company’s legal department disapproving of the selection process (20 June 2011).
A media spokesperson at Daimler refused to comment on the panel appointment.
