Davies Arnold Cooper has secured a £700,000 payout for motorcyclist Robert Dunlop as compensation for the injuries from an accident at the Isle of Man TT in 1994. The superbike rider told the High Court that the crash, which was caused by a faulty motorbike wheel, had robbed him of the chance to succeed as world champion. Dunlop originally pitched his claim against his former racing team Medd Racing, the wheel manufacturers and its UK supplier, at £1.4m. Alison McAdams, a partner in DAC's product liability and group action group, who instructed Stephen Powles QC and Malcolm Sheehan of 2 Harcourt Buildings, for the motorbike rider, said the reduced award was not surprising. "A central aspect had to do with establishing loss of earnings, and obviously it is a matter of opinion whether or not he would have been one of the very best riders," she said. Anthony Goldstaub QC of Ropewalk Chambers was instructed by solicitors from London-based firm Hextall Erskine for the defendants.
