Tsunami-sized waves swept through the bar last week when US firm Debevoise & Plimpton made the shock announcement that it had appointed Lord Goldsmith QC as its chair of European litigation.
The gossip on the bar rumour mill had for a long time been that Goldsmith would go back to his old home Fountain Court Chambers to revive the practice that helped him rake in almost £1m a year.
The bar's belief was so strong that Nicholas Stadlen QC's former room, vacated in preparation for Stadlen's bench duty, had been reserved for Goldsmith. But, as we now know, this fairytale did not have the happy ending the bar was hoping for and Fountain Court has been left mourning its loss.
One source at Fountain Court, upset about the unexpected turn of events, simply said: "We're all very, very disappointed."
