Washington DC firm Covington & Burling is taking on the deputy secretary of the treasury from the Clinton administration as its new head of international.
Stuart Eizenstat will join the firm in the summer to focus on international transactional work, regulatory work and resolving international trade problems. He will also be responsible for coordinating Covingtons' London and Brussels offices.
He says: "I'll be dealing with many of the issues that I was dealing with before - private companies which have problems with governments, either the European Commission or bilaterally, and foreign and domestic companies with issues confronting the US government."
Eizenstat was ambassador to the European Union (EU) for three years from 1993. His main accomplishments during the Clinton administration included negotiating the transatlantic agenda with the EU to set out a framework for relations, and negotiating the Japan Port Agreement to resolve a long-running dispute.
