CoL opens up 2013/2014 scholarships
The College of Law (CoL) has announced the details of its scholarships for the 2013/2014 academic year.
Awards are available for students undertaking the undergraduate LLB law degree, the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL), the LLM Legal Practice Course (LLM LPC) and the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC).
Ten scholarships of £3,000 each are available for the two-year LLB starting in September 2013 and will go towards the first year fees.
One full scholarship is available for each of the full-time GDL, LLM LPC and BPTC programmes starting in autumn 2013.
Winners of the full scholarships will have their entire course fees paid for and can study at a CoL centre of their choice.
In addition one runner-up on each programme will receive a £4,000 scholarship towards the cost of their fees.
Professor Nigel Savage, Chief Executive of CoL, said: “When we launched our scholarship scheme last year we were extremely impressed by the high quality of the entries and the commitment that students showed towards entering the legal profession. The scheme is designed to help ambitious, talented students to achieve their goal of a successful career in the modern world of law and we look forward to reviewing this year’s entries.”
To apply for the LL.B scholarships students must have accepted a place on the course by 7 June 2013. They need to submit an essay, short-video or other form of digital presentation by 16 August 2013 on the subject: ‘If you could introduce a new law what would it be and why?’
For the GDL and LLM LPC scholarships students must have accepted their place on the full-time programmes by 1 March 2013 to enter and the deadline for submissions is 15 March 2013. The subject for the GDL award is: ‘Modern technology has developed rapidly and now pervades all legal entities. How do you think advances in technology will further impact the legal profession and practices over the next ten years?’
For the LLM LPC award the subject is: ‘In Shakespeare’s Henry VI (part two) Dick the Butcher demands “the first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers”. Consider whether this is the public’s attitude towards lawyers today and whether that perception is likely to change over the next ten years?’
Students wanting to enter the BPTC award must have accepted their place on the full-time programme by 22 March 2013. The deadline for their submissions is 28 March 2013 and the subject is: ‘The division of our legal profession into barristers and solicitors is an anachronism. Discuss.’
All entries will be judged by a panel comprising CoL and external legal professionals which will assess entrants ability to demonstrate the professional skills required of modern solicitors and barristers.
