New York firm Coudert Brothers has lured the managing partner of Preston Gates & Ellis' Silicon Valley operation to its Northern California offices to build its technology, internet and new media group.
Jim Topinka is a corporate securities specialist with a practice focusing on representing emerging companies in technology, manufacturing, retail and financial services. He also represents a number of venture capitalists, although he refuses to name clients.
Topinka says: "I'm a corporate finance lawyer who focuses on emerging companies, and over the last two years I've found that virtually every one of the deals has had an international component.
"A number of people call me to represent them migrating their businesses out of Europe into Silicon Valley, for example, so I wanted to join an international firm. One of my clients immediately hired Coudert to do all their work in Europe and Asia."
Coudert has 32 offices spread across North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. The firm has around 60 lawyers spread over the three Northern California practices, which are located in San Francisco, Palo Alto and San Jose.
