Herbert Smith has hired Coudert Brothers' competition specialist Dominique Brault to its Paris office.
Brault re-joins his former Coudert partner Jacques Buhart who left the firm to head the UK firm’s French corporate department in June 2003.
A former deputy director for Consumer and Competition Affairs with the Finance Ministry, Brault was also general rapporteur with the Competition Commission. He advised on drafting competition law reforms across a range of European jurisdictions.
Formerly an associate at Coudert Brothers, Brault joins Herbert Smith as a consultant.
In 2002, France introduced new competition regulations relating to merger control, which made merger notification compulsory. The move has ensured a greater demand for competition expertise among law firms with French operations.
The departure is the latest in a growing tide of defections from Coudert Brothers’ European network and follows that of global co-head of arbitration, Michael Polkinghorne to White & Case earlier this month. Although over the past two weeks the firm recruited Eduardo Silva Romero as an international arbitration partner and former EY Law tax partner Yann de Kergos.
