•The Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act received its Royal Assent last week after 10 years of campaigning by unions and pressure groups. The act will see companies facing prosecution for manslaughter where their gross negligence leads to the death of individuals. This landmark approval will not only seeprivate companies and organisations holding liability, but for the first time government bodies will face unlimited fines if they are found to have caused death due to their gross corporate health and safety failures. Greater levels of ease are expected in prosecuting companies and other large organisations when gross failures in the management of health and safety lead to death. Justice minister Maria Eagle said the act is a groundbreaking piece of legislation that will make it easier to prosecute companies that fail to protect people.
