PFI specialist Russell Jarvis has joined Manchester firm Cobbetts from the Leeds office of Berrymans Lace Mawer.
Jarvis will join as a partner, boosting its banking team and giving the firm additional kudos in PFI. He will head Cobbett's PFI unit within the banking team and his appointment brings the total number of partners in the team to four. Cobbetts' senior partner Stephen White said: "Russell has a very strong reputation in PFI. I'm delighted, obviously, and think it's something of a coup that we've got him. Russell is a name in the PFI world that will bring some profile as well as some clients." Jarvis's brief is to establish a stronger PFI capability for Cobbetts, which has lagged behind Addleshaw Booth & Co and Eversheds in this area. White said that the firm's intention was to make up ground and that Jarvis's appointment was a precursor to setting up a dedicated PFI team. Jarvis will recruit the team and the firm aims to develop a team of about six lawyers committed to PFI work. Jarvis was unavailable to discuss his appointment but has previously said that the return of the Labour government, with its PFI-friendly attitude, will lead to increased work in the North West. While based in Berrymans' Leeds office, Jarvis's PFI work tended to come from in and around Yorkshire, so the move to Cobbetts will consolidate his existing client base with the likelihood of new work in the North. Michael Shaw, managing partner of Cobbetts, insisted that Jarvis will provide the firm with additional expertise in this area. He said: "I'm delighted that Russell has decided to join Cobbetts amid intense competition for his services. I am sure that Russell will prove successful in spearheading a leading PFI capability from a strong existing base."
