If law firms were characters from fiction, CMS Cameron McKenna would definitely make a good Pollyanna. While the majority of City firms were posting double-digit growth in their year-end financials, Camerons managed a mere 6.5 per cent increase to £197m. Most firms might be a little down in the mouth when hit with disappointing results, but don't think for one moment that managing partner Dick Tyler is gloomy.
Just like Pollyanna's glad game, he can find something to be glad about in every bleak situation. He reports that, six weeks into the new financial year, revenue is up 20 per cent on this time last year. What's more, it's the UK operations that are showing the improvement rather than Eastern Europe, in a reversal of 2006.
And long may it continue. We remind readers that Pollyanna had no truck with cynics, who may in this instance comment that a double-digit increase from a poor starting point might not be as impressive as one from a position of strength.
