Clydes brings in Howden GC for professional indemnity offering

Clyde & Co has raided Lloyds of London broker Howden for its general counsel Simon Gildener.

Gildener joined Howden, where he was a board member, from insurance litigation boutique Robin Simon in September 2008. While there he advised the broker and its clients on complex coverage issues.

He said his move to Clydes was prompted by a desire to return to private practice.

“I miss the old life,” he added. “I’m a litigator at heart and I like to be on the front line. I enjoyed being at Howden, but there was a limit to what I could do. I missed it.”

Gildener, who qualified at the New York bar in 2003, joins Clydes’ London insurance and reinsurance team as a partner.

Clydes partner Victor Rae-Reeves said Gildener will focus on professional indemnity defence work, with a particular focus on errors and omissions, directors and officers, and financial institutions insurance work.

Gildener said he plans to maintain a strong relationship with Howden, which is currently in the process of appointing his successor.

“I personally wish I’d gone in-house earlier,” he said. “It was a valuable learning experience.”
