US firm, Jones Day Reavis & Pogue has roped in former Clifford Chance partner, Winston Zhao to help set up the firm's new Shanghai office.
Zhoa joins Jones Day from Clifford Chance's Shanghai practice - the first international law firm to open up in that city in 1993 when the Chinese Ministry of Justice relaxed the rules against foreign law firms practising in China.
Jones Day has deployed Mitch Dudek, a fluent Mandarin speaker, from its Hong Kong office to head up the new Shanghai outfit. Zhoa, along with five other lawyers, will act as a consultant.
Jones Day was one of 12 law firms granted licences to practice in China last week. Herbert Smith and Holman Fenwick & Willan were the only UK firms selected. They are setting up offices in Beijing and Shanghai respectively.
