Clifford Chance faces race discrimination suit

Clifford Chance is being sued for $75m, accused of racial discrimination in its New York office.

Former Clifford Chance associate Caroline Memnon is taking legal action against the Magic Circle firm, claiming the firm discriminated against her on grounds of race.

It has been reported that Memnon claimed the firm failed to provide her meaningful legal work and only hired her for “window dressing”, consequently firing her for making complaints.

The suit claims that after the firm fired Memnon in 2002 it then blackballed her in the US legal community.

The lawsuit claims that after Chadbourne & Parke and Manatt Phelps & Phillips both made job offers to Memnon following her dismissal from Clifford Chance in 2002, the offers were consequently refused.

A spokesman for Clifford Chance rejected the claims, stating that the firm believes them to be without merit. Clifford Chance will be contesting the case.
