Clifford Chance and Farrer & Co have advised on the Rugby Football Union’s (RFU) successful bid to host the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England.
England saw off competition from South Africa and Italy to stage the tournament for the first time in nearly two decades.
Clifford Chance head of media Daniel Sandelson and associate Alex Denoon advised the International Rugby Board (IRB) in selecting the winning candidate.
The firm has a longstanding relationship with the IRB, having been selected as official legal adviser for the 2007 World Cup in France.
Farrer & Co partner Julian Pike advised the RFU on its bid. The firm has links with the RFU through its head of legal Karena Vleck, former head of sports at Farrers.
She joined the RFU as in-house lawyer and company secretary in 2004.
Clifford Chance also advised the IRB on tendering for the 2019 World Cup, which is to be held in Japan.
An official law firm for the 2015 competition has not yet been appointed.
Sandelson said: “It was particularly interesting to see how legal standards in bidding territories are evolving as best practice in competitor territories is established by the spread of international sporting standards.”
