The former co-general counsel of Citigroup has left for Bank One Corporation, just two months after the bank recruited the former chairman of Wilmer Cutler & Pickering as overall head of legal.
Joan Guggenheimer is joining Bank One as chief legal officer, where a 10strong group will report to her directly. Guggenheimer will also serve on the bank's planning group and the company's executive management team.
In October 2001, Guggenheimer was named as co-general counsel and was the head of legal at Citigroup. At the same time, Stephanie Mudick was also named as co-general counsel and head of legal of the global corporate and investment bank's global consumer group.
However, in February, Michael Helfer, who was the chairman at Wilmer Cutler from 1995-1998 and president of Nationwide Strategic Investments, joined Citigroup as overall general counsel of the bank.
Guggenheimer was then named as general counsel of Citigroup, which, according to the bank, was an expanded role that covered governmental, regulatory and community affairs issues.
After joining Smith Barney (now Salomon Smith Barney) in 1985, which was subsequently taken over by Citigroup, Guggenheimer held a variety of roles, spanning head of diversity to being the co-head of anti-money laundering.
Guggenheimer is replacing Christine Edwards at Bank One. Edwards is retiring, but will maintain an of counsel role and will focus on public policy and corporate governance.
Prior to her three-year stint at Bank One, Edwards held similar positions at ABN Amro and Morgan Stanley Dean Witter.
