Not to be outdone by the New York Stock Exchange, which has agreed to merge with pan-European exchange Euronext, Borsa Italiana has started to court merger partners, meeting with Euronext this week. Although often thought of as more low key than its rivals in the Italian market, Chiomenti Studio Legale has bagged the role of sole legal adviser to Borsa Italiana. Borsa Italiana chairman Angelo Tantazzi and chief executive officer Massimo Capuano had their first meeting with Euronext chef executive officer Jean-François Théodore and board member Olivier Lefebvre on 6 June. Meetings with Deutsche Börse are not far off. The Italian exchange is going through a strategic review of its business, bringing in consultants McKinsey and financial advisers Mediobanca and Rothschild.
