Clifford Chance global corporate head Peter Charlton is set to take on the Asia managing partner role following an uncontested election.

Voting for the job, which became available following the illness of former Asia chief Jim Baird, closes tomorrow (9 September). It is expected that Charlton will relocate to Hong Kong in November.
Although a number of people considered standing for the post, ultimately only Charlton was nominated.
One Asia partner said: “Probably two or three people may have given [the position] a bit of thought, but I suspect there wasn’t really much of an appetite.
“There was a feeling that it would be quite nice, and certainly a reflection of the importance Asia holds for the firm, to have someone with the profile of Peter come out to Asia. Peter’s a big-hitter.”
Baird was taken ill when travelling in Asia earlier in the year and remains in a critical condition in Hong Kong. He was first appointed ;regional ;managing partner in 2001.
Elections will be held for the global corporate head job and it is expected that M&A partner Matthew Layton, London corporate head from 1999 to 2003, will be a frontrunner.
