Charles J named as president of the Administrative Appeals Chamber

Charles, who will preside over the Administrative Appeals Chamber from 4 April 2012, was appointed a High Court judge of the family division in 1998.

He is currently the third most senior judge in the family division.

He was the first-instance judge in a case involving an oil technology millionaire’s divorce settlement, but was criticised by Lord Justice Wilson for producing a judgment that was “far too long, too discursive and too unwieldy” (28 January 2011).

He also presided over Yukos’ failed attempt in the High Court to block Russian oil rival Rosneft’s IPO in 2006 (18 July 2006).
