CC wins top spot on ITV Digital administration

Administrator Deloittes opts for CC; Slaughters beats Lovells to advise directors

Clifford Chance has won the plum job of acting for the administrator of ITV Digital, the joint venture between Granada and Carlton. Carlton's main adviser Slaughter and May has won the job acting for ITV Digital's directors, beating Granada's main adviser Lovells to the work.
Clifford Chance has been appointed as adviser to Deloitte & Touche, the administrator which will be running the company when it goes into administration. This is a coup for the magic circle firm, which lost its coveted position as Carlton's main adviser to Slaughters some years ago. Lovells is Granada's main corporate adviser, but has not been given a leading role on the ITV Digital administration.
A Lovells spokesperson said: “Lovells is giving continuing general advice to Granada, including on the company's investment in ITV Digital.”
Slaughters' Estathios Michael is leading the ITV Digital team, while Clifford Chance partner Daniel Sandelson is understood to be Deloitte's main lawyer on the administration.
Slaughters has instructed Gabriel Moss QC and junior Stephen Atherton, both of 3-4 South Square, on the administration. It is not yet known who Clifford Chance will instruct.
ITV Digital applied to go into administration last Wednesday (March 27), because of a £180m contract with the Football League that it cannot afford to honour. ITV Digital signed the deal with the league in 2000. It has said it can only afford to pay £50m – an offer that has been rejected by the football clubs.
Slaughters had asked for the administration hearing to be held in private for reasons of commercial confidentiality. This request was turned down by the High Court.
Clifford Chance was unavailable for comment and a Slaughters partner refused to comment as the case was still commercially sensitive.
