CC takes BLP real estate partner in revenge raid

Clifford Chance has hit back at Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP), which poached its tax partner Michael Wistow last week (28 June), by hiring BLP real estate partner Franc Peña.

BLP made a huge splash in the real estate market with the hire of Robert MacGregor from Clifford Chance in December 2004 and MacGregor returned to the magic circle firm for his two most trusted associates, securitisation star Paul Severs and joint head of real estate litigation Wendy Miller.

Global head of real estate at Clifford Chance Cliff McAuley said: “Peña is someone who will fit in very well culturally here. As opposed to having a collection of individuals who are each running their own book of business, we’re trying to build a team of people that share the same ambitions and approach.”

As a Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer associate, Peña advised Clifford Chance on the disposal of its Aldersgate Street headquarters as well as the lease of its current building in Canary Wharf. After his spell at Freshfields Peña joined BLP’s partnership three years ago.
