Clifford Chance is establishing a stronger presence in Korea through a lawyer secondment programme with local firm Shin & Kim.
Prohibited from opening its own office in Korea, Clifford Chance has come up with this initiative to work around restrictions and service its growing Korean practice, currently run from Hong Kong. Negotiations are underway to establish a system in which Clifford Chance lawyers will spend time in Seoul at Shin & Kim. In exchange, the UK firm will take on that firm's lawyers throughout its international network of offices. Korea practice group head James Walker is understood to be keen to place them in New York and London. Shin & Kim offers both a strong corporate practice and a domestic and international client portfolio. Additional ties between the firms have been made from the recruitment of Shin & Kim corporate practitioner Su Kim Lim. Lim is set to join Clifford Chance's Korean practice this month.
