CC senior partner contenders square up for round three

The contenders for Clifford Chance&#39s senior partner role face another agonising week of voting after the second round failed to produce a clear winner

Thomas Gasteyer, Clifford Chance&#39s corporate partner and deputy chairman, has been knocked out of the race, leaving Stuart Popham, head of global finance, and John Beechey, head of the international commercial arbitration group.
Without Gasteyer, the only international partner to throw his hat into the ring, the contest for senior partner has become a London-based dash to the finishing line.
The third and final round of voting will finish this Friday (4 October), when either Popham or Beechey will gain 50 per cent of the votes.
A number of partners at Clifford Chance expressed surprise that the election had been stretched out into a third round.
After finance partner Richard Pettit was knocked out early on in the proceedings, the general consensus was that the candidates would face a second round, owing to the high number of finance partners that had fuelled fears of a split vote.
However, Michael Bray, former chief executive at Clifford Chance, and John East, head of the partnership selection group, were both edged out in the first round.
