Clifford Chance’s move to hire Li follows the move of Allen & Overy last week to take Freshfield Bruckhaus Deringer’s US and Hong Kong-qualified partner Thomas Jones.
Li focuses on corporate, M&A, private equity, real estate and securities work. He joined Clifford Chance’s Hong Kong office on July 1, and will eventually move to the Beijing arm.
Clifford Chance Asia managing partner Jim Baird said: “[China] is a high priority strategic focus of many of Clifford Chance's global and major regional clients. Accordingly, China remains a key focus for our firm - and Rupert Li's appointment is a further demonstration of our commitment to our clients in the China market, our strategy of strengthening our capability in mainland China and expanding our international and PRC client base."
The firm has some 400 lawyers in Asia, with offices in Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai to cover China, as well as Tokyo and Singapore.
